Presentation “Mercury Emissions” on 33rd Bochum Water Management Workshop on Industrial Waste Water Treatment – Developments and Perspectives

The presentation describes mercury impacts on soil and water (rivers and oceans). Studies are presented showing the increasing methylmercury content in predatory fish. Reasons for mercury impacts are explained, in particular resulting from air and water emissions of coal power plants (worldwide and in Germany).

Subsequently, mercury control techniques are described to reduce emission values from waste water of waste gas treatment of coal power plants. It is shown that emission concentrations lower than 0.1 microgram per litre result from the application of a two step precipitation combined with ion exchangers or membrane filters.
